The creation of the modern washbasin
Have you ever wondered how the furniture we use at home came about? Or where the bathroom sink comes from? We'll tell you a brief history of its evolution.
At first, these implements, also known as washbasins, were small metal basins where hands were immersed and water was brought to the face, or smaller containers were used. Royalty, for example, used jugs called ewers, held by employees for the hygiene of nobles.
Both washbasins and ewers date back to ancient Greece, as well as Rome and Carthage. Washbasins gained popularity in early 16th century Europe. A century later, with the advent of plumbing, these implements evolved, with the addition of drainage systems and, later, taps.
The problem with the washbasins of the time was the smells coming from the drain, but this was solved before the 18th century with a system that prevented the return of odours, allowing for a more pleasant washroom. This system, called the Water Closet, was patented by Alexander Cummings with the creation of the modern toilet.
Bathroom sinks you'll love
It is believed that in Latin America, washbasins arrived during the conquest, brought by priests who used systems to collect holy water, later adapted with taps and pipes for personal hygiene.
In Europe, washbasins were also derived from the holy water fonts of churches. Today, we find styles very different from those of the 19th century, such as:
- Built-in : The sink is inserted into a surface, which can be suspended or part of a luxurious bathroom furniture.
- Suspended : They are not inside another element, allowing their shape and material to be appreciated. They can also be installed on a suspended piece of furniture.
- Pedestal type : They have multiple designs and are characterized by a base that reaches the floor, attached to the sink at the top. There are also one-piece models.
- Integrated : They are part of a large piece of furniture with a spacious worktop and several functional drawers of different sizes and styles.
How to choose the perfect sink
Choosing a sink requires considering several aspects so that it fits into the available space and the style of your bathroom.
Start by considering the space that the sink will take up. This will give you an idea of the size needed and the appropriate style. You can opt for a full-size bathroom cabinet or a wall-hung sink to save space and achieve a minimalist aesthetic.
Aesthetics also involves thinking about the harmony of your home. Choose a style and material that complements the decor of your bathroom and the rest of your home.
Finally, consider the location of the drain pipe. If it is on the floor, it is advisable to choose a pedestal sink or one with a cabinet that covers the pipe. If it is on the wall, you can opt for built-in or suspended sinks, avoiding costly remodeling.
Care and cleaning tips
Keeping your bathroom clean can be a chore, but with these three tips, your bathroom will stay sparkling clean without having to clean it daily:
- Use only cotton cloths or soft sponges with suitable cleaning products. Rinse with warm water to avoid damage to the pipe. Avoid abrasive products and do not leave accessories in wet areas.
- To remove stains, mix baking soda and vinegar, apply to the sink, scrub with a sponge and rinse.
- Wipe with a kitchen towel after each use, even inside the sink, to keep it sparkling and save time on deep cleaning.
A short guide to transforming your bathroom
If you want to transform your bathroom, follow these steps to make your project a reality. A sink, a toilet and some accessories are essential:
- Measure the space and decide on the layout of the bathroom and its accessories.
- Choose styles and materials for accessories, flooring, faucets, furniture and walls, considering colors and textures.
- Consult a professional for the job, which will save you time and money.
- Have a budget and compare prices at reliable online stores.
Common materials for sinks
Two centuries ago, metal vessels were used for washing hands and face. Today, we find a variety of materials and styles:
- Ceramic and porcelain : Create bright white sinks that give a spacious and clean feel. Ceramic is made from clay and porcelain from earthenware, allowing for finer shapes.
- Stone and marble : They provide natural and elegant finishes. Being heavy materials, they are used in resistant countertops.
- Cement : Used for countertops, ideal for natural styles such as country or Mediterranean houses.
All of these materials are moisture resistant, creating elegant and durable sinks.
