Description
pH meter for cosmetics (pastes)
The main task in cosmetic production includes not only manufacturing pleasant-smelling products with catchy names and ingredient lists, but also making production more efficient so that products truly improve skin or hair, and never damage it.
pH measurement in cosmetics involves performing checks with the priority not only of verifying that the product's pH value is identical to the skin's pH value, but above all to ensure good quality, and appropriate viscosity, color, and fragrance.
An overly acidic or alkaline medium, such as a shampoo, can cause skin problems. That is why pH value control in cosmetics is very rigorous and is constantly monitored, and this is not only in the final product. It is important to understand that control must be carried out at all stages of production: from raw materials and all additives, during the manufacturing process until the final product is obtained, such as shampoos, gels, dyes, foams, etc., sold in supermarkets. It is important to comply with the requirements and regulations of the health organization and good manufacturing practices.
Surely we have all at some point experienced the situation where the pleasant fragrance of the foam has started to worsen, even though everything was fine at the beginning. This is proof that the manufacturer made mistakes during the production process and probably did not sufficiently observe pH value measurements and corrections. The cosmetic product must be perfect, not only on the day of its manufacture, but also stable over time. Today, many hair and face products are offered with the designation "BIO". Manufacturers of such products must bear in mind that manufacturing this type of product is much more difficult. The natural ingredients that make a product "BIO" can sometimes be very "capricious", so it is essential to control the pH value very carefully.
When we talk about standard cosmetic products (both for hair and skin), the ideal pH value is 4.5 to 5.5. Depending on the type of skin for which the product has been manufactured and the purpose of the product (they can be chemical substances, hair dyes, strong hair, and deodorants), the values can be slightly higher or lower.
The use of a pH meter with a special glass electrode is one of the most common methods for measuring pH in cosmetics. Thanks to the pH meter, you will obtain reliable results when measuring in shampoos, dyes and foams, gels, and many other (aqueous) substances.
pH meters used in cosmetics are usually handheld devices, easy to use, lightweight, and easy to handle. To obtain reliable results, it is important to keep the glass electrode clean, although on the other hand, it must be used carefully so that it does not break. Modern electrodes have a kind of coating, which makes them very robust.
The use of a pH electrode requires a lot of attention and careful adjustment. All instructions related to the use, cleaning, and maintenance of this sensitive instrument must be followed. When used to measure pH in additives or finished products, such as shampoo, it is essential to comply with the required ambient temperature, otherwise, the measurement values could be erroneous.
The pH value and the effectiveness of the cosmetic are one of the reasons why these products must be stored at a certain temperature. Some of them must be stored in a refrigerator or protected from direct sunlight or high temperatures.
